The Night is alive, the Night is watching…

Without warning, the sound of nearby footsteps pierced the silence, causing me to instinctively alter my form. My white claws and fangs grew to triple their original lengths, while the rest of my body became more sleek and agile. When Lux saw that I had transformed into a tremendously more feral version of my previous self, he instantly dropped my golden tail and shrieked, “Please don’t hurt me!”

Before I could attempt to console him, Lux sprinted off into the dark forest, causing clamor as he went. As I promptly ran after the boy, I quickly realized that I was not the only one chasing after him. At my sides and between me and Lux were three Serrans, each in the form of a panther. When it was close enough, the panther in front of e leapt onto Lux, sending them both barreling forward through the dark trees.

“Help!” cried Lux as the other two Serrans closed in on him. As soon as I had caught up to Lux and the other three Serrans, I swung my claws at the underside of the closest panther, sending it flipping backwards. As the Serran collided into a nearby tree, the other two panthers jumped off of Lux and focused their attention on me. Lux watched in terror as the two panthers then pounced on me simultaneously and pinned me to the ground. “No! Stop!” shouted Lux, but to no avail. While I struggle to free myself, the third panther returned, laughing as he approached me. When the panther was standing over my fox head, Lux screamed, and a bright light flashed, filling my entire vision with white light. That was the first time that I had seen pure light.

After my sight returned to normal a few seconds later, I saw that the panthers were no longer on top of me, and were instead lying unconscious around me. I immediately rose to my hind paws to see if Lux was safe, and felt relieved when I saw that he was relatively untouched. He stood motionless, staring at his hands that were outstretched before him. His hood was no longer covering his head, and so for the first time I saw the boy’s hair, which was the same glden color as my fur.

As I approached him, Lux continued to gaze into his palms as though I was not there. I reached out to him with my paw-hand and asked, “Are you hurt?”

Before Lux could reply, an authoritative voice snapped from behind me, “Don’t touch him!”

I quickly turned around to see that a beautiful young dragoness was standing behind me with her fore-claw extended out in front of her. The dragoness was about the same size as me, and possessed white scales that greatly contrasted the dark environment which surrounded her, giving her an ethereal appearance. “Ah!” cried Lux when he caught sight of the dragon. “It’s that crazy lady again!”

“Is this real?” I asked myself as I inspected the figure before me.

“Yes, I’m a dragon,” said the dragoness sarcastically as she rolled her eyes. “Now could you please step away from the boy?”

When I glanced behind me, I found that Lux was shivering as he clenched tightly onto my large tail. His gaze was fixed on the white dragoness, and his eyes were filled with fear. “I don’t think he likes you very much,” I replied.

“Well, you’re not going to like me very much either if you don’t give him to me now!”

The Night is strange, the Night is mysterious…
